The character of your choice lands on the Isle of Tims with a handful of bizarre birds that constantly demand to be fed yellow droplets. Both stumble across the mysterious Balan Theater, where the permanently smiling Balan packs them off to Balan Wonderworld to find their hearts. Meanwhile Leo Craig is happily breakdancing before deciding to shun everybody and walk off in a mood for some inexplicable reason. Emma Cole’s household maids are all whispering about her behind her back. Players take on the role of a troubled child. What does hold the game back is it’s hampered by a fair number of strange design decisions that make it more difficult to play and confusing than it should. While some might not be entertained by the dated idea of a mascot-driven platformer, the idea in itself isn’t a bad one. With that sort of pedigree, you would think that their old-school collectathon platformer Balan Wonderworld should be good. He also wears the same gloves and golden heels.Balan Company is led by Sonic the Hedgehog and Nights into Dreams creator Yuji Naka. ![]() He wears a white tuxedo with purple sleeves and purple pants that ends with red and white sleeves. In his true form, Lance has white skin, long gray hair, and purple eye shadow and tear. It lacks eyes but has a glowing orange core on his forehead. Tendrils coming from his head and massive claws adorn his hands. When combined with the Negati, Lance takes the form of a giant purple dragon. He also has white gloves and golden heels over his hands and feet. Around his upper chest to midriff is a purple vest with a golden collar that goes out to his arms, ending in black sleeves. He wears a violet jumpsuit around his body and legs, decorated with similar colorful rims and two Negati masks over his hips. He has black shadows around his eyes, with a tear-like mark coming from his left eye. More of these tendrils erupt from his behind like tails. Lance is a slim humanoid with blue eyes with yellow sclera, pointed ears, gray skin, and has long black tendril-like hair with colorful rims coming from them. However, before he can do anything, the Negati combine with him again, this time summoning a black hole that absorbs his body. The monster disperses into smoke, revealing the original Lance, having been seemingly cured from the darkness in his heart. Fortunately, before it appears the day could not be saved, the visitors arrive to support Leo and Emma, granting them the strength to defeat the monster. Enraged, Lance combines with the Negati to transform into a massive shadowy dragon that quickly overwhelms the heroes. Lance summons his minions in his mad attempts to defeat the kids, but using the power of the costumes, Leo and Emma defeat Lance. He shows them a memory of their sadness before challenging them to a battle. Once all twelve worlds are complete, Leo and Emma obtain the power to go into the bottom depth of Wonderworld, where Lance resides. By defeating the Negati and the Nega Bosses, they purify Lance's corruption in their hearts to overcome their despair. He causes this fate to all twelve visitors Leo and Emma encounter along the way. ![]() He is also responsible for trapping the visitors within their own hearts to create the Nega Bosses, powerful Negati made of the people's consciousness by taping them with his tendrils. In the game, Lance appears briefly through each level and creates barriers to block off the player's path or summon a horde of Negati. He injects people who have fallen into despair and turns the fears in their hearts into beasts called Negati, sentient shadows with white masks. ![]() Balan refuses the idea, but Lance says it was too late and departs into the depths of Wonderworld.įrom the depths, Lance fell further down his obsession until his heart was consumed by negativity. To restore the balance, Lance creates a new Balan, warning him not to get too attached or else he will become a Lance as well. However, after 3,000 years, Balan slowly fell into despair from getting too attached to humanity's negative energy, turning him into Lance. According to the tie-in prequel novel Balan Wonderworld ~ Maestro of Mystery, Theater of Wonders ~, Lance was once named Balan and served as the maestro to Wonderworld, an imaginary land comprised of people's memories both good and bad.
